The case of the unsafe water in the Seattle schools has long been debated, ever since the first news appeared in 2003. Since then, more and more schools have been under the media’s scrutiny. Though a lot of years have passed since the first news regarding this matter, it seems that the problem is far from being solved. Given the fact that the USA takes great pride in their high standards of living, it seems unacceptable that problems such as unsafe drinking water should arise at this point. However, these problems are real and unless we take a stand against them, they will become a serious threat for our children.

What can we learn from the Seattle case?

In 2003, as a solution to the previous problems regarding the unsafe levels of lead in school fountains, the Seattle officials implemented a costly water purity program. In some cases, they replaced the pipes, in others they replaced the fountains, and filters were added wherever they were needed. However, when it comes to water purity, you either do things right, or you don’t do them at all. The Seattle program was not very well thought. While the filters that were installed in schools were efficient in filtering lead, they did not do a very good job trapping cadmium.
